Update 2.10pm: Top seed Simona Halep (ROU) has been forced to withdraw from Apia International Sydney 2015 due to gastroenteritis.

“We’re sorry to receive the news that Simona has had to withdraw from the tournament due to illness and we wish her a speedy recovery in time for the Australian Open. We look forward to welcoming her back to Sydney next year,” said Tournament Director Alistair MacDonald.

“During the tournament in China (WTA Shenzhen) I got this problem with my stomach. I feel like I cannot play. I was waiting till today to see if I’m ready or not, but I really cannot play. So it’s tough to start the tournament, and I decided to retire because I think it’s the best way,” she said.

“I feel sad now because I cannot play this tournament. I came here to play all the tournaments so it’s not good to stop. I have to recover first myself and then to think about tennis.

“I don’t know how I played (the Shenzhen final), to be honest. It was like I think adrenaline and I just wanted to win the tournament. I didn’t think about myself too much, just to play that match. I did it very well.”

She was replaced by Nicole Gibbs (USA) in the draw, who fell to Karolina Pliskova (CZE).
